Ariel Bolton doesn’t get visits from Santa Claus anymore. Instead, on cold winter nights, the Toronto raccoons gnaw and scrabble at her skylight and leave gifts of gristle on her balcony. “To the Havens” is her first story accepted for publication. She wrote it in response to a challenge issued to the guests at a Christmas party. Her career so far has involved the typical preparations for becoming a writer. She’s been an equestrian trail guide at a tourist ranch, an aide to politicians, a PhD student in medieval history, and the curator of a historic collection of torture implements.
